Chaos in Chad as security forces violently put down protests

Demonstrators accused of setting fire to new prime minister’s HQ, as anger rises over delays to democratic transition

Chad has been plunged into chaos after police in the capital N’Djamena violently dispersed protests calling for a quicker transition to democratic rule and demonstrators were accused of looting and setting fire to the newly-appointed prime minister’s party offices.

Images circulating online showed at least five bodies lying covered on the ground. Palls of black smoke could be seen in some areas and the crack of teargas grenades could be heard. Protests also took place in Moundou in the south.
